AGM Batteries

AGM batteries, or Absorbent Glass Mat batteries, are a type of lead-acid battery that uses a special absorbent glass mat to hold the electrolyte (battery acid) in place. This makes them spill-proof and maintenance-free, and they also have a longer lifespan than traditional flooded lead-acid batteries. AGM batteries are also more resistant to vibration and shock, making them a good choice for use in marine applications and RVs.

How AGM Batteries Work

AGM batteries work just like traditional flooded lead-acid batteries, except that the electrolyte is absorbed into a glass mat instead of being a free-flowing liquid. This glass mat is made of very fine fibers that are tightly packed together. The fibers absorb the electrolyte and hold it in place, even when the battery is turned upside down.

When the battery is discharged, the sulfuric acid in the electrolyte reacts with the lead plates to create an electrical current. When the battery is charged, the electrical current flows in the opposite direction and the sulfuric acid is recombined with the lead plates.

AGM Battery Advantages

Spill-proof and maintenance-free: AGM batteries are sealed, so there is no risk of spilling acid. They also do not require watering, as the electrolyte is absorbed into the glass mat.

Longer lifespan: AGM batteries typically have a lifespan of 5-10 years, compared to 3-5 years for traditional flooded lead-acid batteries. More resistant to vibration and shock: AGM batteries are more resistant to vibration and shock than flooded lead-acid batteries, making them a good choice for use in marine applications and RVs.

Higher cranking power: AGM batteries can deliver more cranking power than flooded lead-acid batteries, making them a good choice for starting cars and trucks in cold weather.

AGM Battery Safety

AGM batteries are safe to handle, but it is important to follow some basic safety precautions:

  • Always wear safety glasses and gloves when handling AGM batteries.
  • Do not smoke or use open flames near AGM batteries.
  • Do not short-circuit AGM batteries.
  • Do not dispose of AGM batteries in the trash.

AGM batteries are a great choice for a variety of applications. They are spill-proof, maintenance-free, and have a longer lifespan than traditional flooded lead-acid batteries.

They are also more resistant to vibration and shock, making them a good choice for use in marine applications and RVs. However, AGM batteries are more expensive than flooded lead-acid batteries and have a slower recharge rate.
